What a membership is
A membership is something your clients pay for again and again without you having to send a single reminder — for example Online coaching, 1 290 kr per month. The client signs up once on your booking page, saves their card or approves an agreement in the VippsComing soon app, and is charged automatically at the start of every period until the membership ends.
A membership can also include a number of sessions each period. Those work exactly like package credits: the client books with them on your booking page, and they show up as credits on the client's own page. Unused sessions do not carry over — each period starts fresh.
Find everything under Memberships in the dashboard menu: the memberships you sell, your members, and your monthly recurring revenue at the top.
Before you can sell: connect Mollie or VippsComing soon
Memberships can be paid in two ways, and you need at least one of them connected under Settings → Payments:
- Card — needs Mollie.
- VippsComing soon — needs your own VippsComing soon agreement connected directly (VippsComing soon MobilePay, directly). The client approves a recurring agreement in the VippsComing soon app, and the money goes straight into your VippsComing soon account. VippsComing soon memberships must be in NOK, DKK or EUR. VippsComing soon through Mollie can't be used for memberships.
If both are connected, clients choose card or VippsComing soon when they sign up. Klarna cannot be used for payments that repeat.
If you connected Mollie before memberships existed, you will see Reconnect Mollie to sell memberships. Mollie needs one extra permission — to save a client's card for later payments — so the organization owner clicks Reconnect Mollie once and approves it at Mollie. Nothing else about your account changes, and payments you already take keep working.
You can create memberships before you are connected, so everything is ready. Clients simply cannot buy them until the connection is in place.
Creating a membership
- Open Memberships and click New membership.
- Give it a Name and, if you like, a Description — clients see both when they sign up.
- Set the Price per period, and how often it is charged with Billed every and Period — for example every 1 month, every 2 weeks or every 1 year.
- Choose a Free trial (days), or leave it at 0 for no trial.
- Choose a Commitment (months), from 0 to 12. With 0, clients can cancel any time.
- Under What's included, set Sessions included per period and the Service the sessions are booked on. Leave sessions at 0 if the membership is about something else, like online follow-up.
- Turn on Let clients pause their membership if you want clients to be able to take a break themselves.
- Click Create membership.
A new membership is For sale straight away. Turn sales off any time — existing members are not affected, and new clients simply can't sign up.
Good to know
All the terms — price, period, sessions, free trial, commitment and whether clients may pause — apply to new members only. Everyone who already signed up keeps the terms they agreed to: for example, turning off client pause does not take it away from existing members. Once a membership has members, its service can't be changed either.
How clients sign up
When you have a membership for sale, your booking page shows a Memberships link. The client picks a membership, enters their name and email, agrees to the terms — price, how often they are charged, any trial and commitment, and that cancelling takes effect at the end of a period — and pays — Start free trial or Continue to payment, then by card or, if you have VippsComing soon connected, Pay with VippsComing soon. A client who is signed in with that email goes straight to payment; anyone else gets the payment link by email first, so nobody can start or look at a membership for someone else's address.
- Without a trial, the first period's price is charged right away and the membership is Active.
- With a trial, nothing is charged at signup: the card is checked and saved (or the VippsComing soon agreement approved), the membership shows Free trial, and the first real payment is taken when the trial ends. Sessions during a trial are a share of a full period's, rounded up.
- Each client gets one free trial per membership, ever — cancelling and signing up again does not give a second one.
You and the client both get an email when a membership starts.
How billing works
On the first day of every new period, Stund charges the client for the new period by itself — their saved card, or their VippsComing soon agreement. When the payment goes through, the new period's sessions are added and the next renewal date moves on. You don't need to do anything.
Stund's platform fee is the usual 0.5% of each payment, exactly as for bookings: on a card payment Mollie takes it at the moment of the charge; on a VippsComing soon payment the full amount goes to you and the fee is added up and charged once a month, together with your other VippsComing soon fees.
When a payment fails
Cards expire and accounts run dry. When a renewal does not go through:
- The member shows Payment failed, and the client gets an email with a link to update their card. A VippsComing soon client is asked to check the card on their agreement in the VippsComing soon app, or to set up a new agreement.
- Stund tries again automatically 1, 3 and 7 days after the payment was due. If any of those works, the membership carries on — and because the period has already started, a new full period starts on the day the payment went through, so the client never pays for days they couldn't use. A commitment moves back by the same number of periods, so the client still pays exactly the number of periods they agreed to.
- If the last try fails too, the membership is Paused and both you and the client are told. It starts again on its own as soon as the client updates their card (or sets up a new VippsComing soon agreement) — they are charged for a new period from that day, and any commitment moves back by the same number of periods.
A month before a saved card expires, the client also gets a reminder to update it, so most of these never happen. (VippsComing soon keeps track of the card on a VippsComing soon agreement itself, so there is no such reminder for VippsComing soon.)
Memberships with VippsComing soon
A VippsComing soon membership follows the same rules as a card one — trials, commitment, pausing, free periods and failed payments all work as described in this article. A few things work differently because of how VippsComing soon handles recurring payments:
- The client approves an agreement in the VippsComing soon app when they sign up. The agreement shows the membership's name and price, and the client can see it under their agreements in VippsComing soon.
- Each payment is sent to VippsComing soon 2 days before the new period starts. The client sees the upcoming payment in their VippsComing soon app, and VippsComing soon takes the money on the morning of the day the period starts — also when the period (or a free trial) ends later that day. Clients are told "on the morning of" that date.
- A client who cancels in those 2 days is still not charged for the next period, as long as VippsComing soon lets Stund withdraw the payment in time — which it normally does until the morning it is taken. The same goes when you or the client pause or end the membership in that time.
- A free period given less than 2 days before a renewal applies to that renewal if Stund could still withdraw the payment. If it was too late, the payment goes through and the free period applies to the one after — the member page tells you which.
- If the client stops the agreement in the VippsComing soon app, it shows in the member's history. Without a commitment still running, Stund treats it as the client cancelling: the membership ends at the end of the paid period, and the client gets no payment-failed reminders. This holds however VippsComing soon tells Stund about it — even if the first sign is the cancelled payment, or Stund only finds out when it tries the next payment. Inside a commitment you get an email, the membership carries on, and the next payment fails — so the client gets the usual reminders to set up a new agreement.
- Changing card: the client can change the card for the agreement in the VippsComing soon app. They can also choose Set up a new VippsComing soon agreement, or Pay by card instead if you take card payments — the old agreement is only stopped once any payment already sent on it has gone through. If they do this after a failed payment, Stund withdraws a retry already sent on the old agreement and charges the new one straight away; a retry that still fails on the old agreement never counts against them.
- After a pause (or once a client sets up a new agreement after a payment-failure pause), the first VippsComing soon payment lands a day or two after the membership starts again, because VippsComing soon needs at least a day's notice. The new period starts when that payment goes through, so the client never loses any days.
- The money goes straight into your VippsComing soon account, and Stund's 0.5% is collected once a month like your other VippsComing soon fees.
Managing a member
Click a member in the members list to see their membership: status, current period, commitment, card on file, sessions left this period, every payment and the full history of what happened and who did it. Under Manage you can:
- Pause — stops new periods (and their charges) straight away. Pick a date to pause until, or leave it empty to pause until you resume it yourself. The current period is not refunded, and sessions the client has already paid for stay usable until that paid period ends. Pausing a free trial ends the trial and its free sessions. A pause doesn't eat into a commitment: the periods still owed start again when the pause ends, so the commitment end moves back by the periods the pause skipped.
- Resume — starts it again. If the paid period has already run out, the client is charged for a new period right away.
- Give a free period — the next renewal is free, and the client still gets that period's sessions. If a payment has just failed, giving a free period forgives it at once.
- Cancel at period end — the membership runs to the end of the period the client has paid for, and never ends before the commitment does. A membership with a failed payment, or one on pause, ends right away. If the client still has paid time left (a VippsComing soon payment can fail a day or two before the new period starts), the sessions left in that period can still be booked until it ends.
- Undo cancellation — changes your mind before the end date arrives. You can only undo a cancellation you made yourself: if the client cancelled, only they can take it back (from their own membership page), so their billing never starts again without them.
Tip
Coaches on your team can manage members too if you turn on Coaches can handle payments in Settings → Team — but only for memberships whose sessions are booked on their own coach profile. Memberships without a service are for the owner and admins only.
Cancelling and commitment
- Clients can always cancel, but a cancellation takes effect at the end of a period — never in the middle of one, and there are no partial refunds.
- With a commitment, the membership ends at the first period end on or after the commitment is over. The commitment counts from the first paid period — not from the trial, and not from a free period you gave before the first payment.
- Cancelling during a free trial costs nothing: the membership ends when the trial does, and the card is never charged.
- If a client cancels while a payment has failed, or while paused for non-payment, the membership ends right away. Sessions left in a period they already have can still be booked until that period ends. Stund does not chase money for the rest of a commitment.
- A pause is not a way out of a commitment: if a client cancels while their membership is paused (by them or by you) and the commitment isn't over, it continues after the pause and ends at the first period end after the commitment — which the pause has pushed back. Without a commitment, cancelling during a pause ends it right away. You can always end a paused membership at once yourself.
- Unused sessions don't carry over: each period's sessions can only be booked for times inside that period.
What clients can do themselves
Clients manage their own membership from My bookings on your booking page, from stund.net/me, or from the link in any membership email. They can:
- Cancel membership — it ends at the end of the period, and Keep my membership undoes that before the date. A cancellation you made for them can't be undone by the client — they are asked to contact you;
- Update card — or, on VippsComing soon, Set up a new VippsComing soon agreement. Where you take both, they can also switch between card and VippsComing soon here;
- Pause for 1 to 3 periods, if you turned on client pause for that membership. A client's pause starts when the period they have paid for runs out, and Resume now ends it early.
Following your numbers
The top of Memberships shows your active members and your Monthly recurring revenue — what your paying members have signed up for, per month. A membership billed every week or every year is converted to its monthly value, so they all add up.
Every membership payment also appears in Payments alongside your bookings and package sales, with View member to jump to the member. Analytics has a membership card with monthly recurring revenue, active members, churn and membership revenue for the period you pick — see the analytics article for what each figure means.
Good to know
- Refunds of membership payments are not handled in Stund yet. If you refund one in your Mollie dashboard (or your VippsComing soon portal, for a VippsComing soon payment), the money goes back to the client, but the membership itself is not changed — cancel or give a free period here if that is what you agreed with the client. Refunded amounts are still counted in your membership revenue and payment figures.
- Disputed payments (chargebacks): if a client disputes a membership payment with their bank, you get an email and it shows in the member's history. The membership is not changed automatically — pause or end it if you want to. Like refunds, a disputed amount still counts in your membership revenue and payment figures.
- Membership payments are taken in your organization's currency. For VippsComing soon that has to be NOK, DKK or EUR — change it under Settings → Company before you create the membership.
- A client whose membership actually started — they paid, had a free trial, or were given a free period — can't be deleted from Clients, so their payment history stays complete. A sign-up that never got that far (nothing paid, no trial) doesn't block it: it is deleted together with the client. If their payment for a sign-up is still being checked with the payment provider, deleting has to wait until that is settled — try again the next day.
